You may love her or you may hate her but the fact of the matter is Kylie Jenner has become the biggest star out of the Kardashian/Jenner camp on her own merit. The 18-year-old has become an icon for a new generation of kids that were too young to remember her sisters rise to fame through x-rated exploits and appearances on Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie’s reality show “The Simple Life”.
Over the past 10 years, we’ve seen the youngest of the Jenner clan evolve from an adorable, prepubescent prankster to a beautiful young woman thats so idolized, young women everywhere are trying to emulate her signature look – a matte, sultry pout on a perfectly contoured palette. So when Jenner began to tease her new lip kits, I knew they were going to be huge. In all honesty, Kylie could have repackaged Bonnebell Dr.pepper LipSmackers with her name on them and her fans would have paid top dollar for them. Not that the lip kit’s aren’t good quality, I’m sure they’re excellent, but an advantage to being in the Kardashian/Jenner camp is that you don’t have to invest in advertising. The lip kits (which come in three shades and include a matching liner) even had their own instagram account launch over the weekend which drew in thousands of loyal fans.
It’s no surprise when the $30 kits hit the market yesterday, they sold out within minutes. Now, the only way you can get your hands on Jenner’s new lip collection is to dish out hundreds of dollars on eBay, or wait until the second wave of kits hit the shelves; but fret not, I’ve compiled some of my favourite lipsticks which are dead ringers (or pretty darn close) to Kylie Jenner’s three signature shades.
- Candy K – a nude/blush matte liquid lipstick
Candy K is one of those shades that probably shouldn’t work on every skin
tone, but somehow does. It’s like the sisterhood of the traveling pants of the three lip shades.
High End Copycat – Laura Mercier Paint Wash Liquid Lip Colour in the shade”Golden Peach” ($34)
Ok this one is close, but doesn’t quite have the pink undertones of Candy K. Not a problem though because as any beauty addict knows, a lipstick should always be lined. Use a liner in a pink tone on the whole lip before applying this liquid lip colour on top for that Candy K effect.
Drugstore Copycat – Revlon Colorburst Matte Lip Balm in the shade “Elusive” ($9)
This shade is pretty darn close to Jenner’s Candy K for a drug store brand.
2. Dolce K- a caramel/nude matte liquid lipstick. This is the flirty shade you would take on a casual night out. Dolce K and Candy K are fairly similar to one another and are the chameleons of the set. Each can be worn on its own or paired with a smokey eye without giving that drag queen look (unless thats what you’re going for, then do you)
High End Copycat –Kat Von D Everlasting Lipstick in the shade “Bow n Arrow” ($24)
This one is pretty much a dead ringer for Dolce k. I for one love love love Kat Von D’s everlasting liquid lipsticks. I have them in Lolita and Lolita 2, both of which I hold near and dear to my heart. These liquids last all day long and are highly pigmented. I usually just put a dab on the centre of my lip and spread it around with my fingers. A little goes a very long way with these.
Drugstore Copycat – NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in the shade “Abu Dhabi” ($6)
you really can’t go wrong with a lip colour that costs $6, especially when it so closely resembles two highly coveted high end liquid lipstick. Thank you NYX Cosmetics.
3. True Brown K – The perfect brown shade. I’ll admit, I had some trouble finding similar shades that were this perfect. It’s a dark brown with cool undertones that don’t take over your face.
High End Copycat- NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in the shade “Deep Aubergine” ($32)
I’ve talked about these NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil’s a few times before on my blog. These lip pencils are the definition of long wear. They can seriously last all day long, through meals, drinks and everything in between. They can probably survive the apocalypse too… I wouldn’t be surprised.
Drugstore Copycat- Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in the shade “Dominatrix” ($18)
This one isn’t quite a “drugstore” brand, but it’s on the more affordable side so I decided to put it under the drugstore category. Another perfect brown shade that probably couldn’t get much closer to True Brown K.
So there you have it, my high end and drug store copycats of Jenner’s lip shades. Trust me, if I can get my hands on some Dolce K, I would but since it seems impossible to purchase any one of these kits (without dishing out hundreds on eBay) then these alternatives should be able to tide me over until I can get the real thing.
