Tomorrow is officially the first day of December so I think we’re finally allowed to start talking about the holidays and most importantly – holiday outfits. Anyone who knows me knows I love anything that sparkles, my theory is that you can never have too much glitter in your life. One of the reasons why the holiday season is my favourite is because I can get away with wearing sequin to every event and it’s completely acceptable. I know for a fact that I’m not alone here considering in the past couple of weeks all the clothing stores I’ve entered have been packed with festive, bright and sparkly garments. It can be a little overwhelming deciding how to wear certain pieces without coming off too gaudy or childish. I found three pieces this holiday season- a pink sequin crop top, a black sequin tank and black sequin shorts- which I will style for both a day and night look. I chose these three pieces for two reasons: the first is that many retailers are carrying similar ones meaning they’re going to be extremely popular this holiday season and the second is because these could be the hardest to style. A sequin dress is pretty straight forward but shorts? That’s a whole other story.
- Sequin Crop Top – Forever 21 (I got this piece last year so obviously they’re no longer carrying it, but here is a link to all the other sequin cropped tops that are currently in stock Forever 21 Sequin Cropped Tops )
Day Time Look –
The first look is basic high waisted black pants with this sequin cropped top. Since the shirt is so loud, I thought it would be best to pair it with dark pants and a high ponytail. I didn’t go with any accessories considering the shirt is such a bright, loud colour. For shoes I decided to go with black booties instead of heels to dress the outfit down for a day time look. I could have easily paired this with heels and a blazer for a night time look but I decided to mix it up a bit.
Night Time Look-
For the night time look I decided to go with this faux leather midi skirt. I love the look of sequin and leather together. It gives a rough edge to an ultra-femme look. Side note, I tried to get the wrinkles out of the skirt but It was really tough with this material considering I couldn’t iron it or pop it in the dryer so this will have to do. Pair a sequin top with any midi skirt in a neutral colour to give the outfit a touch of class for any holiday party.
This is an extremely popular piece that appears on the shelves at multiple clothing retailers every single year. I love it because it’s so versatile and subtle but still gives that hint of holiday sparkle.
Day Time Look
For the day time look I decided to pair the tank with leggings, booties and a slouchy white cardigan. This is an extremely comfortable outfit with a touch of elegance to add to the holiday charm. Perfect for a quiet lunch or a gift exchange with the girls. Again, I decided to not go with any accessories because I didn’t want to take away from the sequin top. If you were to add any accessories to this look, I would recommend a long necklace in a blush or metallic tone, paired with a delicate charm.
Night Time Look
For the night time look I, again, went with leather. I paired the sequin tank with faux leather leggings, an open maroon cardigan and a long necklace. I decided to wear my hair up for this look so that the outfit wouldn’t look too busy. If you’re going for this look, I would recommend wearing a cardigan in a deep, rich colour. Wearing white or nude would create too much of a contrast between the light and dark colours and break the eye away from the sparkles (which, for the sake of this article I decided would be the focal point of each outfit). With a rich coloured cardigan, all the colours blend together nicely for a seamless, holiday look.
These sequin shorts were a bit of an impulse buy for me. I fell in love with them on the rack, when I tried them on I wasn’t completely convinced but decided to give them a go anyways. Once I got home I tried various different outfit combinations till I found one day time look and one night time look that I really liked. Unlike a sequin top, shorts need to be paired a a little more intricately.
Day Time Look
For this day time look, I paired the shorts with black tights, a white sweater and a leather biker jacket. I felt that the sweater was loose enough to counteract the thickness of the material around the hips, and the jacket tied everything else into a neat little bow for the perfect day time look. If you’re going to go with thick, sequin shorts, make sure you add a jacket, blazer or cardigan to frame your hips and create the illusion of a smaller frame. I actually ended up liking this a lot more than I thought I would. Also, can you tell I REALLY like the look of leather and sequin together? I have a problem.
Night Time Look
For the night look, I kept the tights on but replaced the sweater with a cropped top and added a long necklace to draw the eye to the centre of the outfit rather than focusing on the shorts, which again, may widen your hips. The cropped top isn’t fitted either which drew a straight line from my shoulders to my hips which allowed for a continuous look without too much of a break or any bulging.
